ABOUT

Lucy Madras Neils, a native of the Pacific Northwest was educated in the visual arts in the San Francisco Bay Area. She attended the Rudolph Schaeffer School of Design, a private school, which focused its three-year diploma program on the history of art, Western and Oriental, color, three-dimensional and space design, drawing, interior design and graphies. Upon graduation, she joined the staff to teach color design.

Her post-graduate studies were completed at the Day Studio Workshop which specializes in teaching custom decorative painting techniques. Madras’ instruction included classes in faux marble and stone, glazing and gilding, wood graining, trompe l’oeil and muraling, historical complex stenciling and wall glazing.

She then shared a partnership in "Studio One," a specialty design and decorative painting studio which catered to Bay Area interior designers and private clients. It was a freelance commercial and residential decorative painting design service. She created lacquered free standing folding screens, painted surfaces (fresco), furniture restoration and designed graphics. She created screens for an offshore manufacturer to the trade. She did it for the Western Merchandising Mart, Charlton West Showroom, Galleria Design Center, Emporium Capwell, Home furnishing department, Banner Design for the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Graphics and portfolios for Wolf-Schulz Gallery in San Francisco to house a body of Picasso original prints. Additionally, Madras worked two commissions for Cost Plus Imports executive offices for the CEO/Owner. During this time, Madras contributed her painting expertise to four consecutive annual San Francisco Designer Showcase Houses sponsored by the University High School.

In 1991, she retreated from the city to a remote farmhouse to fine-tune and refocus her goals.

Currently, Madras is residing in Portland, Oregon where she continues to paint. The move to the Northwest gave birth to a variety of work including “Prints from Wine Country” and “Botanicals” as well as other genre, including landscapes, and still life to name a couple within the variety we will be offering.

Madras has made a transition from decorative art to fine art painting and drawing.
